The Essential Way

Magnify your people not by raising the roofs of their houses, but the souls of its inhabitants, advised the Greek philosopher Epictetus (55-135 AD) whose Stoic philosophy emphasized freedom, morality and humanity.

In this spirit, the Cuban Masonic Law in Article 1.1 states: Freemasonry is the organic institution of morality whose purpose is to dispel ignorance, combat vice and inspire a love of humanity.

In relation to freedom, the first plot for independence was hatched in 1810, in the lodge “The Temple of the Theological Virtues.”  And to Masonry also belong the creation of the national emblem, the uprisings of October 10, 1868 and February 24, 1895.

However, in the last half century we have remained frozen in the past. Just look at the facade of the temple where appears inscribed in bronze the agreement of the First National Historical Congress, held in 1942, that stated: “… Cuban Freemasonry has been at all times, since its founding, the organization that has most contributed to independence, freedom, culture and progress, both from the ideological point of view, and by example, of sacrifice, heroism and perseverance of its members to give Cuba a life of human decency, equality, and social fraternity and a sound system of democracy. ”

You could say that we behave according to the model of the Greek philosopher Parmenides (540-450? BC) who claimed that the universe is eternal, unified, unmoved. When, in reality, contemporary science shows us that is closer to the conception of Heraclitus (540-475 BC), defender of the theory of constant mutability. Remember that this philosopher said, the only constant is change and nothing offers more resistance.

In our workshops we Masons are, as defined by social scientists, a seed of civil society. Democratic practices, with their methods and principles, give us, as in the past, the ability to contribute to the changes that our country needs.

Therefore, we must strengthen the genuine values of the Institution. Hence, these are the objectives of the Renewal and Fraternity candidacy, for elections of officers of the Grand Lodge of Cuba in 2012. It is based on three points: 1) Respect for prevailing Masonic Law, under the premise that no one is above the law.  2) A broad National Masonic Reconciliation, without any exclusion.  3) To provide an immediate solution regarding the relationship between Masons living in Cuba and those who are abroad.

In the Coat of Arms of the Grand Lodge of Cuba is the inscription: Sit Lux et Lux Fuit. Infodere vis. Which means: Let there be light, and there was light. In union there is strength.  That reminds us of the importance of cohesion, the road is essential to achieve out of the long dark night of our history.

The undersigned lodges, saddened before the crisis of values and lack of esteem for prevailing Masonic Law, which has resulted in the unfortunate situation that Cuba Masonry is now passing through, have decided to address ALL CUBAN MASONS, without distinction of views or preferences, to invite them to work on a common project: THE REDISCOVERY OF THE PRINCIPLES AND PURPOSES OF UNIVERSAL MASONRY.

This project will be based on three fundamental points:

1.  Respect for prevailing Masonic Law,  under the premise that no one is above the law.

2.  A broad National Masonic Reconciliation, without any exclusion.

3.   Providing an immediate solution regarding the relationship between Masons living in Cuba and those who are abroad.

To meet these basic objectives, WE SUPPORT AND NOMINATE Gustavo Enrique Pardo Valdés, President of the Cuban Academy of Masonic Studies, for Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Cuba in the 2012 elections.

Don’t be Shocked by Anything

Among cannibals.  At least when we kill, it is to eat.

Since the founding of the Cathedral of the Russian Orthodox Church in Havana, I have been mulling over the Cuba-Russia reconnection.  Some of my blogger colleagues, upon the dedication of the recent Book Fair to that country, quickly posted their brilliant writings on the web. In spite of what chauvinists say, women are smarter and quicker than men.  It is not necessary to substantiate this with neuroscience or brain research; the Biblical reference is enough.  The Book of Genesis tells us that it was Eve who first ate of the fruit from the tree of knowledge, and later convinced Adam to do likewise.  Since then they have the advantage over us.

Russia was the guest of honor at the recent 30th International Tourism Fair.  At the same time, we also celebrated the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations. The old French proverb, “The more things change, the more they remain the same” is relevant here. These Russians, having shaken off the soviet dust, dream of the tsarist crown and scepter.  Having mutated, the communists now exhibit the desires of the nobility.  Although by their methods, they are more like Ivan the Terrible than Peter I. For this reason, they are natural allies of our lifetime corrupt rulers.  At the end of the day, the mutual enrichment took place under the carte blanche of socialism and the building of communism.  If they pay the fee, they will be equally welcome on the island these modern pirates and buccaneers of the world.  The ambitious speak all languages, even that of the disinterested.

The construction of the great orthodox installation could have been an act of devotion of the successor in power, who now, in his old age and political and economic weakness remembers religion and commends himself to St. Nicholas, the patron saint of Russia and lost causes.  Don’t be shocked by anything.

To Our Worthy Ladies in White

Sunday, May 9th, we celebrate Mothers Day in Cuba. This antecedent was established in Philadelphia, USA, where Ana Jarvis founded an Association with the purpose to promote a propaganda campaign in favor of dedicating the second Sunday in the month of May to honor mothers.

The proponent of this homage in our country was Victor Munoz Riera, journalist and member of the Masonic Lodge “Fe Masonica” who adopted that initiative and published an article in El Mundo newspaper with the title “My White Carnation” in 1919. Later after his election as a municipal councilor in Havana, he proposed the foundation of this date in the Municipality of Havana; it was approved on April 27, 1921. Years later, Pastor del Rio, a Mason and a Representative to the House of Representatives of Cuba, got ratification in Congress of the Republic on July 7, 1927.

The family is the angular rock of society and its cohesion is the job of the mother. Today we know, from discoveries about the human genome, that all of us living on the planet carry a part of the primitive mother of humanity, the conventionally called African Eve, embedded in our mitochondrial DNA.

In our homage, we should dedicate a minute of meditation, recite a poem, hum a melody or say a prayer for Mother Creation. Together with all that uninterrupted chain that has made possible the survival of our species, and those who suffer for their children. I, in my own way will include the worthy Ladies in White.

New Wineskins

On Friday the 12th, the economist Oscar Espinosa Chepe – an honorable prisoner of conscience from the 2003 Black Spring, on parole – gave us a lecture at the Blogger Academy on the state of the Cuban economy at the end of 2009.

He showed us, with facts, figures, tables and benchmarks, how the system in place since 1959 is in its terminal phase. The inability to generate wealth due to its inefficiency and unproductivity over a long period prevented it from replacing what it spends. Instead of implementing appropriate economic changes it began a process of self-cannibalism, and has devoured itself. Fortunately, the disaster is of such magnitude that it is impossible to perpetuate it.

Structural transformations involve socio-political changes that generate redistribution of power. For this reason the snake has preferred to swallow its own tail and engorge itself. With criminal arrogance the regime has gobbled up everyone’s inheritance.

Those in power would prefer to implement minimal changes without affecting their own exploitative interests. But the Gospel of Matthew tells us: No one puts new wine into old wineskins, or else the wineskins will break — the wine will spill out, and the wineskins will be ruined.  Instead they put new wine into new wineskins, and both are preserved.

I contextualize this biblical quotation when I see the octogenarian State Council Vice-President Jose Ramon Machado Ventura all over the country, with the presumption that young people will continue with the aged vessels. I am in touch with that generation and I know perfectly well that they are already making their own wine and preparing new wineskins.

The Toothmarks

A picture is worth a thousand words. Chinese proverb.
To see it once is better than to hear it ten times. Russian proverb.
Seeing is believing. Spanish proverb.

It’s said that proverbs are the echo of experience.  Through seeing we capture 70% of the information we receive, hence these three cultures transmit messages alluding to vision.

Two things became clear to the population at the end of the year:  1. That 2010 will be a difficult year, the most difficult yet!  2. No openings will occur.  That is, the citizen will not be permitted to find solutions through their own means and methods.  The absolute power asks – one more time! – resist.

Hunger, which follows our tracks like a hyena its wounded prey, nipping at our heels.  For two decades families have lived with minimum sustenance in very vulnerable positions.  At the beginning of the prolonged economic crisis ¡which has already been ongoing for 20 years! – euphemistically called, “A Special Period in a Time of Peace” – brought on by the extinction of socialism in the excavate Union and Eastern Europe, deficiency disorders proliferate: optic and peripheral neuropathy, scurvy, rickets, and other diseases of malnutrition.

In this situation of poverty the despots, like a New Year’s gift, on the first of January put into effect new regulations in the General Customs of the Republic, another measure to exploit the emigrants who come to bring help to their families.

The oppressors know of the growing unrest and the possibility of a social upheaval, of greater dimensions than what happened in 1004.  With the aggravation that this time will not be deflected toward the sea.  It would be inward, an implosion that would fragment the base of their power.

Already in the last military exercise in 2009, of the series called “Bastion,” exercises were conducted for the containment of popular demonstrations, and different forms of intimidation and repression against those showing discontent – the emerging civil society and opinion Readers – were also applied.

At the same time, the mass media have intensified the language of confrontation with the United States.  They are trying, one more time, to use the tired pretext of an enemy to fire up patriotic sentiment against a supposed threat.  But the people now know that the ills are caused by the exclusionary system.

One example of the toothmarks are the hardships to acquire our daily bread.  I apply the teachings of ancient wisdom, as reflected in popular sayings, and offer you these images of the lines at the bakeries in the area where I live.
